CHANGE! Not a word that we like or easily think of. We are so used to our routine habits and are so comfortable with them that it is almost impossible for us to think of ‘change’. Even the slightest change makes us so uncomfortable. Am sure the title of this article, ‘Change Management for a Change’ would have too!
Let’s say you have been keeping your car keys on your study table for like years now. One fine day your mom changes the position of those keys to a key holder on the main door because it becomes difficult for the rest of the family members to find the keys. What happens? I personally land up getting irritated. In fact we all do.
A small change in the keys’ position can bother us so much. Imagine what happens when we talk about bringing about changes in the way we lead our lives!
Actually it’s just like changing the position of keys. We all know it’s important. It’s a lot more convenient for all the family members to pick up the keys from the key holder on the main door instead of picking it up from the study table in your room. We know that keeping the keys in our personal room doesnt make much sense since the car belongs to everyone. But we still choose to keep it there because it’s comfortable for us. And we simply refuse to adapt to a small change like this even when we know it’s necessary and it’s the better thing to do.
I know what you are thinking. This was a very very silly example. But don’t you think its only from silly things like these that you really learn. You come to know how apprehensive you are when it comes to changing something ever so small in our life, even when we know it’s for the good.
Change can be difficult. In fact, it is difficult. But its not impossible. If you really wish to, you can bring it about, no matter how big or small. But you must follow the 3 three magic steps.
The 3 Magical Steps of Change Management
The first step towards managing the change is ‘Awareness’. You can only change something when you know that there is something that needs to be changed. When you think that something is currently not working for you and can be done in a better way, its time for a change!
Once you get aware you are half way there. The second step is ‘Acceptance’. This is actually where the problem typically lies. We are so resistant to change that we are far from accepting it. But yes, if you think it’s needed, acceptance should not be that big of a problem. You might still face some subconscious resistance, but you’ll eventually get past it. If you are convinced that you need to change, you will eventually accept it.
Lastly, you do what you need to do. What I mean is, you move to the final step, i.e. ‘Action’. Once you are aware and you have accepted that you need to need change, you need to take the appropriate actions towards it. This is the most important step of all. That’s obvious! If you aren’t taking any action on what you think is to be done, there is no point in thinking about it in the first place. So, ACT upon it!
So these are the three magical words that can change your life;
Awareness –> Acceptance –> Action
