communicate effectively

We have discussed the importance of communication skills training in the past many times. We all know how important it is to be able to communicate effectively not just in our workplace but even at home. It does not matter if you are in a leadership position or you just a junior level professional, good communication is a must.

Your communication skills can help you grab or make you lose opportunities. As they say, its not what you say it, but how you say it! You must have noticed, that sometimes you try to say something, but the other person ends up misunderstanding it.  However, when your colleague or friend explains them the same thing they understand. How do you think that happens? It’s because of the differences in the way you are communicating.

When you are able to communicate effectively, chances of misunderstanding lessen. As a result, your relationships are clearer and healthier at your workplace and in your personal life.

Are you really communicating well?

Communication is not just about you saying things and the other person listening. Its a two-way process. An exchange of ideas and information. But do we always remember that while we are speaking? No! We therefore need to practice being more open and willing to listen to what others have to say. And that’s not just about the words they use, but also catching on to the non-verbal aspects like their body language and voice.

If you wish to communicate effectively, the first thing you need to do is look at your intention while communicating. Are you really ready to listen to the other person or are you just waiting to speak? Are you genuinely interested in what they are saying and listening intently. Or are you just ‘hearing’ what they are saying. If they say something which is contrary to your beliefs, are you still open to listening? Or are you just attempting to defend your point of view. How do you feel when you communicate with different people? Are you comfortable in your skin or are you just waiting for the conversation to get over.

If you want some interesting insights into these areas of communication skills, I recommend attending a good communication skills training program. Such programs not only teach you the aspects of communication you should be looking at, but also give you feedback on where you are.

Communication skills training also helps you connect better with your team members. Conversing to get a better understanding of the other person and managing difficult conversations. Not to forget, improving our communication with our customers too!
